The present paper proposes the integral concept of a computer-supported tool management system representing the integration of the individual databases in the tool management system. The integral concept includes the databases for the cutting-off process and calculations of the cutting tool by the finite element method. The moodel selects optimum cutting conditions by taking into account the workpiece data (dimensions and required degree of surface roughness), the tool data and the metal working machine data. By selecting optimum cutting conditions it is possible to reach a favorable ratio between low manufacturing costs and high productivity taking into account the given limitation of the cutting process.
